Is CBD Effective for pets? Is it safe?

We are asked daily if CBD is useful for pets and safe. While the answer is yes, it doesn’t mean that you can give the CBD oil you have in your medicine cabinet to your furry loved one.

Before giving your pet any hemp-derived product, you should take the time to understand the products and your pet. Green Ridge staff are not veterinary professionals. But, every one of our team has a pet we give CBD to.

CBD and How it Affects Humans

Cannabidiol, a compound found in Cannabis sativa L, is thought to help us maintain our general health and wellbeing. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has indicated that cannabidiol may be beneficial in the treatment of specific symptoms, ranging from anxiety to pain.

Most mammals are thought to have an endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is involved in a wide variety of processes, including pain, memory, mood, appetite, stress, sleep, metabolism, immune function, and reproductive function. Receptors are present throughout the body, including our skin, immune cells, bone, fat tissue, liver, pancreas, skeletal muscle, heart, blood vessels, kidney, and gastrointestinal tract. According to the World Health Organization, CBD is generally safe and well-tolerated in humans. But does this mean your pets can take it?

The Benefits of CBD for Your Pets

Mammalian pets have an endocannabinoid system. Dogs, cats, and horses may all be able to benefit from hemp-derived CBD.

It has been shown that CBD has an impact on the inflammatory response. A famed study by Ethan Russo found that CBD can reverse the inflammation response. The reduction of inflammation can reduce symptoms of pain, including chronic pain.

Cannabinol has also been thought to reduce seizures and anxiety. Pharmaceutical companies are developing drugs for the treatment of seizures utilizing extremely high doses of isolated CBD.
